No 124. Hammersmith Bridge

View from the Surrey bank looking across to Hammersmith.

The current elegantly styled bridge was opened in 1887 and designed by Sir Joseph Bazalgette(also famous for his designs for London’s sewerage system).   It is a famous landmark in the University Boat race as it stands approximately 1/3 of the way along the course and following a recently installed new lighting scheme now looks very striking at night.   Downstream on the south side are the old Barn Elms Reservoirs which have now been converted into a large a very successful habitat for wild-life.
