No 125. Barnes Bridge

View from upstream on the Surrey bank.

Designed by Joseph Locke & Thomas Brassey, this cast-iron railway bridge was built in 1848 to carry a loop line to by-pass Richmond.   It is an important land-mark towards the finish of the University Boat Race held each spring and has a specially strengthened footbridge which was built to support the crowds of spectators.   Unfortunately it is now closed on Boat Race Day!.
