No 132. Richmond Bridge

View from the downstream towpath on Surrey bank.

The oldest bridge in Greater London, this bridge was completed in 1777 replacing an earlier ferry.   It was originally a toll-bridge, but tolls were abolished eventually and the gates and toll cottages removed in the 19th century.  The bridge was widened in 1937-39 when the stones on the upstream side were numbered and removed to be replaced after extensions to the supporting piers and roadway.
