No 144. M3 Motorway Bridge

This bridge carries the busy M3 motorway across a very historic part of the river at Laleham.   The poet Matthew Arnold spent is whole life in this pretty riverside village and the original Laleham House was the family home of the Earls of Lucan.   The 3rd Earl was the man who gave the order for the famous ‘Charge of the Light Brigade’ at Balaclava during the Crimean War and until 2001 there was a local pub named after him.   On one side of the river are many residential houseboats of unusual design, most of which have their own gardens, and on the other side is a popular camp site.
